How to measure ▾
- Femur: sit on a hard chair, knees at 90°. Measure hip crease to top of kneecap.
- Shin: seated, measure top of kneecap straight to the floor.

The Mechanics
Why your femur changes everything
In the squat, the barbell has to stay stacked over your mid-foot or you fall over. A longer femur pushes your hips further behind the bar at the bottom, so your torso has to lean further forward to bring the bar back into balance. That is why two lifters at the same depth can look completely different — and why a long-femur lifter leaning forward is doing it right, not wrong (The Barbell Physio, Bret Contreras).
But bone length is not the whole story. A 2017 study by Fuglsang and colleagues found that ankle mobility predicted squat forward-lean better than any segment-length ratio. A stiff ankle keeps your shin vertical, which shoves the knees back and the chest down — often more than a long femur does. Unlike your femur, that is trainable (Stronger by Science). In the deadlift, the driver is your torso-to-femur ratio. A long torso and short femur keep your shoulders over the bar with an upright back, favouring the conventional pull. A long femur and short torso raise your hips and flatten your back — where a wider sumo stance can shorten the range of motion and keep you more upright, provided your hips have the mobility for it (Stronger by Science, PowerliftingToWin).

Femur Length & Lifting
Long femurs don't make squats harder — they make them different. A longer thigh bone forces your hips further back at the bottom of a squat, and to keep the barbell balanced over your mid-foot your torso has to lean further forward. That extra lean is normal and safe; it only becomes a problem if you fight it by trying to stay artificially upright. Lifters with long femurs usually squat best with a slightly wider stance, elevated heels, and often a low-bar position.
Often, yes. A long femur relative to your torso raises your hips and flattens your back in the conventional deadlift, which some lifters find uncomfortable. A sumo stance widens your base and shortens the range of motion, letting you keep a more upright back. But it only helps if your hips have the mobility for a wide stance — if wide feels pinchy or unstable, conventional is the safer default. Try both for a few weeks and keep the one that lets you brace hardest.
Sit tall on a hard chair with your feet flat and knees bent at 90 degrees. Measure from the crease of your hip (where your thigh meets your torso) to the top of your kneecap — that's your working femur length. Measure your shin from the top of the kneecap to the floor, and your torso from the top of your hip to the base of your neck. You don't need to be exact; even a rough measurement shows how your proportions compare and how they change your ideal squat and deadlift positions.
Ankle mobility usually matters more. Research by Fuglsang and colleagues (2017) found that ankle dorsiflexion predicted how far a lifter leaned forward in the squat better than any bone-length ratio did. A stiff ankle keeps your shin vertical, which shoves your hips back and your chest down — often more than a long femur would. The good news: unlike your femur, ankle mobility is trainable, so daily ankle work and heel elevation can noticeably reduce forward lean.
There's no single 'good' ratio — there's only the form that fits yours. A longer torso relative to your femur keeps you upright and suits conventional deadlifts and high-bar squats. A longer femur relative to your torso means more forward lean and often favours a wider stance, heel elevation, or sumo pulling. Most people sit somewhere in the middle. You can't change your bones, but you have plenty of adjustable levers: stance width, foot angle, heel elevation, bar position (high-bar vs low-bar squat), and conventional vs sumo deadlift. These let you work with your proportions instead of against them, and improving ankle and hip mobility expands your options further. The goal isn't to copy someone else's technique — it's to find the positions that keep the bar over your mid-foot on your frame.
